Like any first-time visitor to Napa Valley, California, I couldn't take my eyes off the miles of manicured grape vines lining the fields on both sides of Route 29, the main stretch of road that runs about 30 miles from Calistoga (in the north) to American Canyon (in the south). With a rich history of farming, ranching, winemaking, and hospitality, the town of Yountville—which sits almost equidistant from each end—is often called heart of the Napa Valley.

Basic English grammar isn't very basic, is it?

Our language evolves and changes. We're constantly adding words from other languages and technology, not to mention that our rules and pronunciations are freakishly inconsistent. (If you don't agree, try teaching a new student why the words go and to are pronounced differently.)

It's understandable that misused words, commonly misspelled words and writing mistakes happen.

But in the business world, your professional credibility might be at stake if you misuse any of these often confused words:

A good friend and mentor of mine turned 60 recently. And frankly, I almost forgot that it was a Big-0 birthday for her — you know, the decade-marking, life-changing, big party type of ones?

We've all been told many times to cut down on salt intake in order to lower our risk of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. But a new report from the Institute of Medicine suggests that cutting down on salt might not be the best course.

Current guidelines say adults should not consume more than 2,300 milligrams of salt a day. People at risk for heart disease are urged not to take in more than 1,500 milligrams a day.

My postal carrier, and the UPS and FedEx drivers are all smart when it comes to dogs and preventing bites—they carry dog treats with them. Now I'm not sure if having treats on you actually prevents biting or helps you to reward good dogs for good behavior. But my guess that with dog bites man a job hazard, having dog treats on hand can't hurt.
